malini
mālinīThe second ordering of the Sanskrit alphabet used in the Shaiva tantras, also called the nadiphantakrama, the sequence beginning with na and ending with pha. Where the ordinary matrika runs from a to ksha, this one interleaves vowels and consonants in an order the tradition derives from a grid already laid out in matrika order, so the second alphabet is a product of the first rather than a rival to it. Its precise sequence varies between texts; Somadeva Vasudeva's study of the sequence catalogues the divergences. Ksemaraja observes that an agama spreads out either alphabet before extracting a mantra from it.
