We collect little, we sell nothing, and we run no advertising. We do use Google Analytics to understand how the site is read, and that sets cookies. You can switch it off in one click — see Cookies and analytics below.

What we collect

Newsletter. If you subscribe, your email address is stored with our email provider (Kit) solely to send you the newsletter. You can unsubscribe from any email at any time.

Analytics. We run two, for different reasons. Cloudflare Web Analytics gives us a simple headcount: pages viewed, approximate country, referrer. It sets no cookies, does not fingerprint you, and cannot identify you. Google Analytics tells us more — which pieces are actually read to the end, how people move between them, what brings them here. It sets cookies, and Google receives your IP address to work out an approximate location; Google does not pass that address on to us. We have not enabled advertising features, audience export or ads personalisation. If you would rather not be part of it, choose Switch it off in the banner, or Cookie settings in the footer — the choice is remembered on your device and nothing further is sent.

Payments. If you contribute or buy something, payment is handled entirely by our payment processor (Razorpay). We never see or store your card or bank details. Razorpay processes that data under its own privacy policy.

Reactions. If you tap a reaction at the foot of a piece, we store the page, which reaction, and a one-way hash of your IP address. The hash exists only to stop the same person voting repeatedly and to rate-limit abuse; it is never shown to anyone, never linked to you, and is not used for analytics or profiling. Reacting is optional and anonymous — no account, no email, nothing that identifies you.

Messages. If you email us, we keep your message and address to reply and, where useful, to improve the work.

What we do not do

We do not sell or rent your data. We run no advertising on this site, no ad networks, and no remarketing or advertising cookies, and we have not switched on the Google Analytics features that would build an advertising profile of you. We do not attempt to work out who you are.

Cookies and analytics

Google Analytics sets cookies — _ga and a second one beginning _ga_. They let Google recognise the same browser across visits so that two visits from you are not counted as two people. They hold a randomly generated identifier, not your name or your address. Google retains the data for 14 months, after which it is deleted.

These load by default, and you can turn them off. We have chosen not to hold the site behind a consent wall before you have seen a word of it. Instead the banner appears on your first visit and offers a genuine refusal: choose Switch it off and analytics is disabled immediately, the cookies already set are deleted, and nothing more is sent. Your choice is stored on your device and honoured on every later visit. You can change your mind whenever you like through Cookie settings at the foot of every page.

You can also refuse at the browser level — most browsers block these already, and Google publishes a browser opt-out add-on. We honour those too; we do not attempt to work around blockers.

Cloudflare Web Analytics sets no cookies at all and is not affected by any of this. Third parties you choose to interact with — Razorpay at checkout, Kit if you subscribe — set their own cookies under their own policies.

Your choices

You can turn analytics off at any time through Cookie settings at the foot of every page. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter from any email. And you can ask us to delete any personal data we hold about you — your email address, your messages — by writing to [email protected].
