upadesa

upadeśa

Oral instruction passed from teacher to pupil, and in the tantras the condition attached to a mantra's transmission. The Kubjikamatatantra requires that its mantra come down through the sequence of the lineage accompanied by such instruction, in the same breath as it admits that the mantra has been written out in reverse. The requirement explains a pattern visible across the commentarial literature: where the instruction was lost, later and otherwise authorised commentators could be left unable to decode the coded mantras in the texts they were expounding.
