antahkarana

अन्तःकरण antaḥkaraṇa

The 'inner instrument': the mind considered as the internal organ of knowing and acting, as opposed to the outer instruments (the senses). Vedanta analyses it into four functions, manas, buddhi, ahamkara and chitta, and holds it to be an instrument the Self uses, not the Self itself.
