upanishad

उपनिषद् upaniṣad

The closing layer of the Veda, the texts of knowledge (jnana-kanda) on which Vedanta is built. The word is popularly read as 'sitting down near' a teacher; Olivelle argues its oldest sense is a hidden connection, and Shankara read it as the knowledge that destroys ignorance.
