The Vastu-Purusha-Mandala: The Plan Behind the Temple

Before the first stone is set, there is a square.
Not a stone square. A drawn one. A grid scored on the cleared ground, divided into smaller squares, each one assigned a name and an occupant. The builders of a classical Hindu temple do not begin with walls. They begin with this diagram, and the diagram is older and stranger than the building that will rise from it. It is called the vastu-purusha-mandala, the “site-being-diagram,” and it claims to hold a cosmos and a body inside its lines.
This article is about that plan behind the plan.
The being beneath the grid
The diagram carries a myth, and the myth explains the grid.
A formless cosmic being once grew without limit and pressed up against the sky. In one telling he is born of the sweat of Shiva, in another simply a presence that swelled until he blocked heaven from earth. The gods could not abide him. They threw him down and held him there, pressing him face-down against the earth. Then they sat on him. Each deity took a place across his pinned body and held it fast, and where they sat became the squares of the plan. The being is the Vastu Purusha, the spirit of the built site. The grid laid over him is the mandala.
The story is not folklore alone. It is recorded in the textual tradition. A version appears in the Matsya Purana, one of the eighteen major Puranas. The astronomer-polymath Varahamihira (6th century) treats the site-being in the chapters on architecture in his Brihat Samhita (“Great Compilation”). Later the architectural manual Mayamata carries the scheme forward. Across these sources the logic holds. The deities are not decoration on the plan. They are the plan, pinning the being down square by square.
In the developed form, forty-five devatas, divine beings, bind the Purusha’s body. The ones along the rim are the dikpalas, the guardians of the directions: Indra in the east, Yama in the south, Varuna in the west, Kubera in the north, and the rest at the corners and between. They hold the edges.
And at the centre sits Brahma.
Brahma at the centre
The central squares belong to Brahma, the creator. That core is called the brahmasthana, “the place of Brahma.”
This is the most consequential point on the whole diagram, because the brahmasthana marks where the garbhagriha will stand. The garbhagriha, literally “womb-chamber,” is the sanctum, the small dark cell at the heart of a temple where the deity is enshrined. The grid puts the divine at the still centre and ranks everything else around it. The creator holds the core; the guardians hold the margins; the pinned cosmic being holds it all together by being held down.
So the plan is already a statement before it is a building. It says: the centre is sacred, the edges are guarded, and the whole thing rests on a cosmos subdued and made to serve.
Two grids, and a careful caution
The mandala comes in standard sizes, counted as squares to a side.
Two are most discussed. The sixty-four-square grid, eight by eight, is called the manduka mandala. The eighty-one-square grid, nine by nine, is the paramashayika. There are smaller and larger schemes in the texts, but these two carry most of the weight in discussions of temple and house.
A common tradition associates the sixty-four-square manduka with temples and the eighty-one-square paramashayika with dwellings. It is worth stating this carefully. The association is a tendency in the tradition, and it is not a law. Usage varies across texts and across regions, and the sources themselves do not hold to a single fixed rule. So the grid that “should” sit under a given building is less settled than a clean diagram suggests.
There are larger and finer schemes too. The texts run from a single undivided square up through grids of many subdivisions, and the choice of grid was tied to the kind of building and the rite it housed. A small shrine and a great temple did not call for the same diagram. What stays constant is the principle. The site is squared, the square is subdivided, and each cell is given an occupant.
That gap, between the tidy rule and the untidy record, runs through this whole subject.
The temple as cosmos, the temple as body
Why build on a being at all? Because the temple is meant to be a model.
It is a model of the cosmos. The garbhagriha at the centre is the cave, the womb, the heart, the place where the worshipper meets the divine in the dark. Above it rises the shikhara, the temple’s tower, whose name means “peak” or “mountain-summit.” The tower stands for the cosmic mountain, Meru, the axis of the world. A single vertical line runs from the buried foundation deposit, up through the sanctum, to the finial at the very top. Foundation to crown, one axis.
It is also a model of a body, the body of the Purusha laid out in the plan. The centre is the heart; the parts are limbs; the structure is a living being made architecture. The worshipper who walks the temple is, on this reading, moving across a body and toward its heart, drawing inward from the guarded edges to the dark core where the deity waits.
These two readings, cosmos and body, are not rivals. They are the same idea told twice. The cosmos has an axis and a centre; so does the body; so does the temple. The mandala holds all three in one figure.
This reading was given its fullest statement by Stella Kramrisch in her study The Hindu Temple (1946). Kramrisch read the temple as the manifest form of the diagram, the cosmos and the Purusha made stone. Her thesis put the vastu-purusha-mandala at the centre of how the temple is understood, and much later writing works in her shadow.
The texts and the architect
None of this floats free of documents. There is a literature, dense and technical.
The manuals are the Shilpa Shastras and Vastu Shastras, the treatises on craft and on building. Among the best known are the Mayamata and the Manasara, two foundational architectural texts whose dates remain uncertain; the Mayamata is generally taken to be the later of the two, and any firm dating should be given as a range rather than a fixed year. To these belong royal and authored works. The Samarangana Sutradhara (“The Architect of [the King’s] Halls”) is attributed to King Bhoja of Dhara (11th century). The Mansollasa, also called Manasollasa, was composed for the Chalukya king Someshvara III and is dated to 1129 CE. The Aparajitaprccha (“The Questions of Aparajita”) is ascribed to Bhuvanadeva (12th century). Alongside the shastras run the Agamas, the ritual scriptures that govern temple worship and consecration.
The person who turns text into temple is the sthapati, the master architect. The sthapati directs the design according to the shastras, laying out the mandala, fixing the proportions, supervising the craftsmen. The role is named and ancient. The architect is not improvising; he is applying a tradition he has inherited and is meant to know cold.
Proportion, kept at the right level
The texts care intensely about proportion, and it is easy to overstate how precise their results were. So a measured account is in order.
For images of deities, the texts use the talamana system. Proportion is keyed to the tala, the face-length, which is subdivided into angulas, finger-widths. An image is built up as so many talas tall, with the parts scaled to that unit. For buildings, the texts use the ayadi-shadvarga, a set of six proportional formulas applied to a structure’s dimensions.
What both systems share is the kind of measure they give. They give proportional scale, ratios between parts, rather than fixed absolute sizes. A figure or a building is “right” when its parts hold the correct relation to one another and to the chosen unit, at whatever overall size the work is made. The claim is harmony of ratio. It is wise not to claim more than that.
Tradition and record
Here the two ways of speaking about the mandala come apart, and both deserve a clear voice.
Tradition holds that the plan is a revealed cosmic diagram. Drawn correctly, it makes the temple a true dwelling of the deity, a place where the divine actually resides because the structure repeats the order of the cosmos and the body of the Purusha. On this view the mandala is not a design aid. It is the reason the temple works.
The historical record asks a narrower question: what did builders actually do? Here the answer is more cautious. The mandala is well attested as a textual scheme, codified over centuries in the manuals named above. Its application in surviving stone is another matter. The ideal grid is not mechanically or literally reproduced in built temples.
The clearest statement of this caution comes from Michael Meister. In “Mandala and Practice in Nagara Architecture in North India,” published in the Journal of the American Oriental Society (volume 99.2, 1979), Meister studied how the grid was actually used in the Nagara temples of the north. He found the mandala functioning as a flexible, idealized framework rather than a fixed template stamped onto the ground. The texts describe an ideal. The builders adapted it.
So the two scholars frame the same diagram differently. Kramrisch foregrounds the ideal, the temple as the mandala made manifest. Meister cautions that the texts are idealized and that application varies from building to building. Neither cancels the other. The mandala is real as a tradition, real as a literature, and real as a way of thinking about sacred space. It was not a stencil pressed uniformly onto every site.
That tension is the honest shape of the subject. A myth of a pinned cosmic being, a literature of careful rule, and a record of builders who held the rule loosely in their hands.
The square comes first. What rose from it was never quite the square, and was never meant, perhaps, to be only that.
