HomeGlossarymauna

mauna

मौन mauna

Silence, especially as a spiritual discipline and, in the case of Dakshinamurti, as the highest teaching itself. The para-vidya, the higher knowledge of the self, is held to be untransmittable in words; the guru's silence is its form. Shankara's Stotra: the guru's exposition is silence, and the disciples' doubts are cut.
