sadharanikarana
साधारणीकरण sādhāraṇīkaraṇa"Universalisation": the de-personalising of emotion in aesthetic experience, first named by Bhatta Nayaka. On stage a grief is stripped of its owner and becomes grief as such, belonging to no one, so it can be tasted without being suffered. This is why weeping in a theatre does not wound.
