tamas

तमस् tamas

One of the three gunas: the quality of inertia, heaviness, darkness, dullness and delusion. When tamas predominates, there is sleep, sloth and confusion; but it is also the principle of rest, stability and form. It binds the soul, the Bhagavad Gita says, through heedlessness, laziness and sleep.
